Heart Surgery Risk

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG) is a commonly performed operation used to improve symptoms of angina, prevent major heart attacks, and, in some cases, to prolong lifespan. Although the operation is relatively safe, there are potential risks of complications and death during or shortly after CABG procedures.

This application is designed to give patients and their families and friends an estimate of what the chances for complications or death are for a patient who is considering CABG surgery. The calculator is based on data from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons National DatabaseĀ© and the Online Risk CalculatorĀ©. This adaptation of the data is meant to be educational, and not a tool for clinical decision making. Those judgments must be left to the patient and the healthcare providers caring for the patient. This application makes many assumptions about the patient's current and past medical history, and will not be as exact as risk assessments performed using more complete data.
